Seeing Sacramento – and a Race

Kelly’s final marathon of 2019 took us back to California – Sacramento, to be precise, for the California International Marathon.

Packet pickup was in the former home arena of the Sacramento Kings. I know these arenas are out of fashion, but I love the old intimate spaces.

Once his packet was in hand, we headed back to the city for some relaxation and a bit of sight-seeing.

We had dinner at Frank Fat’s, a Sacramento politico institution. It also had some of the best Chinese food we’d had in a while, as well as amazing Singapore Noodles.

After a good night’s rest, we spent the next day just bumming around the city. Most of the time we relaxed at the hotel (it was raining), but we did venture out for meals. Old Sacramento had a good fish and chips shop.

And a great local ice cream parlor. The owner loves history and infused history into the entire space, from shake names to decor.

Before we went to pasta dinner with running friends, the rain gave way to a beautiful double rainbow. Since we were really missing Bridget, this was a bit of a blessing to see.

Our hotel was in the heart of Sacramento – the Downtown Commons. The new Kings arena is in the area, and a lot of public-private money has gone into redeveloping the area.

All too soon race morning arrived. Runners had to take a bus to the start, so I kissed Kelly goodbye and set about doing my own thing for the morning while he was running.

First, coffee and a breakfast sandwich at the Old Soul Coffeshop.

Then a lot of sight-seeing – Sacramento’s City Library.

And the Heritage Elm.

City Hall (naturally!).

And back to Old Sacramento for plenty of on-my-own-time wandering.

I love love love old buildings.

The end of the line for the Pony Express.

This mail drop cracked me up.

The Sacramento River was beautiful.

The Southern Pacific terminus!!

This also cracked me up.

These mini-donuts were amazing. Just amazing!

Second to my love of old buildings is my love of old bridges.

And back to the race to cheer Kelly to the finish line!

The race ended right at the base of the California State Capitol.

Last race for 2019 run and done – he’s tired and ready to go home!

The CIM was marathon #56 and state #20.
