The Word for 2019 | Kindness

I’ve been thinking a lot about the state of American culture and how it trickles down to interpersonal relationships. We live in a tribal society of us vs them – and “those people” are usually the cause of our woes. The neighbor who does things we don’t like. The driver who doesn’t obey the traffic rules (written or unwritten). The cyclist who doesn’t yield to the runner and the runner groups who leave no path for the cyclists. And maybe it’s the nature of the work I do, but every day I see people being their worst selves on social media and in emails.

Instead of bemoaning dysfunctional relationships, bad behavior, sour attitudes and bitter hearts, I’ve decided there is something in my circle of control.

That’s why I’ve decided kindness is my word for 2019.

I doubt I’ll be able to turn the other cheek all the time – after all, 2019 is a local election year and I expect plenty of froth and foolishness. But I can opt to be kind more often than not. I can work to get to know my neighbors (already underway!). I can say a prayer for the authors of ugly emails and social media posts in addition to taking a breath before replying.

I think a little kindness can go a long way.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. – Galatians 5:22-23
