So what do you need a custom frame for?
You need a custom frame for a gorgeous piece of delicate family crochet, gifted to me by my grandmother. I measured the piece and realized that nothing short of a 24×24 inch frame would be adequate. I built a frame, as described yesterday and got ready to frame my piece.
This is where things got a bit complicated. How exactly do you attach crochet to a backing without destroying the integrity of the piece? I debated using lightweight fusing, fabric tacks or hem tack. Eventually, I determined the best thing was to use a running stitch to sew the piece to my fabric-covered backing.
It sounds easier than it is. Pushing the needle through the fabric-mounted foam core board was quite painful for the old thumb. Nothing that a dab of bleach (oops!) and a band aid couldn’t fix.
After a few hours, I was done! I tacked the center (for stability) and around the edges of the entire piece so it wouldn’t shift over time.
Gorgeous, huh?
I think this may be one of my favorite figure-out-how-to-do-it projects ever.
