Design Dilemma

With the Great Blind Crash of August 2009 comes an opportunity to rethink our window treatments. Or perhaps not.

Standing at the kitchen cooking island, I can look out the kitchen bay window. Don’t you love the oh-so-attractive missing center blind?

Or I can turn and look out the french doors leading from our breakfast nook into the backyard. Note that the french doors also lack blinds. This, however, was the way we inherited the house:

The question that’s been plaguing the Hayleys is: What should we do with the french doors?

Ok, I confess – it’s only been plaguing me. Marathon Man merely says, when sun is beating on him while sitting at the table in the late afternoon:It sure would be nice to have something on those windows
to block the sun coming in.
I get it. I need to do something about those windows.

Here’s the problem. The entire house has wonderful 2″ wood blinds – except for the french doors. As well, the kitties love to watch the bunnies while sitting by the door, so we can’t put something up that totally blocks their view. And I should note that I find shirred curtains completely distasteful. If you have them on your door windows, I’m happy for you. They just won’t be in the Hayley Home.

Here are our options:Simple solution – we could hang wooden blinds, like these:
Or we could do something totally different. I’ve been toying with the idea of having the same window treatments throughout the family room, kitchen (excepting the bay window), dining room and sitting room. After all, these are essentially connected spaces as our home is an open plan.

My thought is to do something light and airy, that will frame the windows but allow a lot of light into the space. Something along the lines of: So I’m wondering…do I take down the wooden blinds in the kitchen bay window and the small windows surrounding the breakfast nook and put up roman shades instead? What would you do, dear readers?

And what do you think of having the same window treatments throughout the downstairs living spaces?

I think you're giving this entirely too much thought.

The light and airy floor length sheers would provide some fun for the kitties. On the other hand you might not see it the same way.

  3. Have you considered solar roller shades?
