Funerals bring everyone in the family together. (obviously)
That meant there were some cheeky monkeys – like these two – with us on Wednesday.
Before visitation began, Aunt Shannah sat down with A and J to remind them that although we all knew Great-Grandpa was in heaven, we still felt very sad because we missed him. Aunt Shannah said that it was possible Great-Grandma, Grandpa J and Grandma Mo, Aunt Shannah and Uncle (The Boy), Aunt (Baby Sister) and their mom and dad might cry some. She also suggested that hand holding and special hugs might help us feel not so sad and lonely.
A and J took the responsibility very seriously. It helped a lot that their mom (Middle Sister) and dad had done a really good job of preparing them for the funeral.
I’ve never been able to stay tear-free during the playing of Taps, much less when it’s for a family member. While I was sniffing (and sweating in 109F temps), a little hand touched my leg.
A: Aunt Shannah, are you ok?
Me: I’m just feeling a little sad right now. I really miss Great-Grandpa.
A: Me, too. Can I hold your hand?
Kids are so sweet.
Baby C did her part to be sweet to Great-Grandpa while he was still with us. Looks like it worked! |
I love my children. They really do just know when to say the right things. I am glad they didn't have the 21 gun salute, because I lose it every time. :/
I said the same thing to The Boy.
