Wow – in my respite from writing, I almost missed sharing our expedition to Oktoberfest.
The Oktoberfest in Addison, Texas, is supposedly the second-largest in the world – if you can’t make Munich, make it to Addison.
And brats, of course. The Boy enjoyed a venison brat. I was jealous.
Though my pheasant and chicken brat was very special. If I had a do-over, I’d top both of them with grilled onions and sauerkraut.
This slice of pizza shocked us with its size, but we soldiered through (sharing, of course). It’s topped with crumbled brat and sauerkraut. Yes, sauerkraut.
Carrying this on our search for a picnic table turned us into the Oktoberfest version of the Pied (ha – get it, pied?) Piper. Dozens of people stopped us to ask where we found the brat-and-sauerkraut pizza.
It looks like a mess, but believe me it was an unbelievably delicious mess.
But from bizarrely delicious, we veered into traditional – potato pancakes with sour cream and applesauce.
And munched on some cinnamon roasted nuts (walnuts, almonds and pecans).
We were well past full (arriving there with the pizza), so we grabbed some strudel to go – cherry and apricot almond.
Both delicious. Of course.
I can’t believe that we’ve lived here since the last 1990s and have just now gone to our first Oktoberfest. I have a feeling this year won’t be our last.
