One thing the State Fair of Texas is famous for is Big Tex.
Of course, we’re all in mourning over the fiery death of Big Tex this week. Bizarrely, The Boy and I saw him on his last evening of folksy “Howdy”-ness:
Good-bye, Big Tex. We hope you’re enjoying the great round-up in the sky. |
Anyway, that’s not what this post isa bout. This post is about the other thing the State Fair of Texas is famous for: Fried Food.
Seriously. Fried food has a long and storied history at the fair, subject to fried food competitions and taste tests galore.
And for all the times I’ve gone to the the fair (5 or 6 times over the last 15 years), I’ve never had anything fried other than a corny dog. Of course, that made for a perfect 101 goal item: try some of the unusual fried foods at the fair.
So this year, try them we did.
Corny dog (a classic…but this time, updated with jalapenos and cheese inside the hot dog):
Fried cactus strips:
Fried oreos:
Fried pina colada (a type of fried ice cream, actually):
I officially had too much fried food when I took my second bite of fried oreo. That was unfortunate since there was still fried food to be eaten.
On the train on the way home I told The Boy that I thought I was going to vomit after eating so much grease – that’s what an otherwise healthy diet will do for you.
But success! No vomiting in the end, fried foods eaten and I can go back to eating just a corny dog when we go to the fair and calling it quits with that.
