The events of 9/11 were remembered everywhere yesterday – TV, radio and in the blogosphere.
But today, ten years and one day later, I wonder:
- Are we a stronger country or a weaker one?
- Are we more united or more divided?
- Do we know our neighbors more or less?
- Do we trust more or less?
- Are we more generous or foolishly selfish?
It would be a shame if we allow tragedy to make us more of our worst selves instead of more of our best selves.
I don’t want to simply “never forget” and thank our first responders and military. I don’t want to text a donation. I don’t want to wave a flag and proclaim my patriotism.
Those things are good and have their time and place.
But what seems more lasting is being the kind of person that loves well, contributes to the local community and lives unselfishly.
