I ran out of dishwashing soap this morning.
Ok, not really a tragedy. I do have an abundant supply of dishwashing soap. I merely ran out of soap in my nifty in-sink soap dispenser.
Enter the Big Mistake – I thought to myself: Self, you have plenty of time to refill that soap dispenser before leaving for the office!
Refilling my in-sink soap dispenser simply requires unscrewing the plastic bottle from underneath the sink. As I quickly discovered, my soap dispenser is mounted behind the sink.
Of course it is! Everyone knows that, you might say. Let’s just say that while everyone might know that, I did not.
I crawled under the sink and unscrewed the bottle, muttering leftie-loosey, righty-tighty! all the while. I carefully lowered the bottle to avoid breaking the pump tube and emerged triumphant.
After refilling the soap – taking care to avoid my usual soap overflow disasters – I crawled back under the sink to reinstall the plastic bottle.
It wasn’t easy. The bottle was soap-slippery, I forgot all about leftie-loosey and righty-tighty and I couldn’t get the bottle to connect with the upper hole.
I was in the middle of repositioning myself to get a better angle to go at it when The Boy walked into the kitchen.
What are you doing? he asked.
We needed more soap. I thought this would be a simple thing to take care of before leaving this morning, I replied.
Well, he said. Having to crawl on your knees under the sink in your work clothes should have been your first clue that this wasn’t a good morning project.

And you know what? Later that evening I was washing up the dinner dishes and discovered something startling.
The top of the soap pump lifts off, clean and simple as can be, to allow for easy refills from above.
