I went to lunch with my friend, Jodi, today.
Among many things shared over that long lunch, we talked about our mutual desire to live a simpler life. I think it’s healthy that two married believing women are able to say “enough is enough” and push for quieter lives.
For many years I’ve tried to be all that I can be. What I’m learning more and more is that I can more effectively be all that I can be if I try to BE a little less.
Today, one month from my 37th birthday, this is what I want:
- To love my husband more each day
- To maintain a comfortable, clean home
- To have a lap available for a kitty when needed
- To keep my body fit and healthy
- To be a hardworking, trustworthy employee
- To continue being a woman after God’s heart
So, Jodi, thanks for the encouragement today. Here’s to living a simple life, and to simply living life.
I love your resolutions, Shannah.
Have you read Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World? If not, I might have to add that to your birthday present – our ladies’ bible study group has been working through it, and we, too, are learning how to let go of our self-imposed “have-tos” and focus on what truly matters.

Thanks, Stacie! I’ve not read the book you mention, but it sounds great.
I have to confess that I’m wondering if this is just me pushing back against the hustle and bustle, or if this is more of a trend that is gaining steam.
It’s almost as though everyone has spent years and years trying to climb the ladder and to prove themselves, only to find out that they don’t like either the view from the top or who they had to become to do it.
My biggest question these days is this: Where is the value?
Is there value in investing my time here or there? Is there value for my company? For my family? For my relationships? For my spiritual health?
If the answer is no, instead of doing it “just because” like I would have five years ago, today I just find I can’t be bothered.
Having known you for several years, I think I can say with a high level of confidence that you are doing a pretty good job on your list.
Those are just a few of the things that make you amazing.
