I Don’t Think That Word Means What You Think it Means

About six months ago, notes started appearing on our door from our apartment management team.

Dear Residents,

Due to an unforeseen problem with a water pipe, some buildings will be without water from 9-5 tomorrow. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Sincerely,
The Park at Fox Trails

Sometimes the note would read “boiler” instead of water pipe. However, in every instance the situation would be “unforeseen” and leave us without water for the next day.

Since we get these notes at least once a month – this month, several days in a row – I’m wondering how you can still call the situation unforeseen?
I think I can predict with some certainty that we’ll have a problem with a water pipe and/or boiler at least 4 more times before we move to the new Hayley House in May.
